What is Neue Sans Press?

It’s looking back to go forward.

Neue Sans Press is Erin May Cochanco’s personal Risograph practice, drawing on the vocabulary of typography and graphic design. The name, 'Neue Sans,' can be interpreted as 'nothing new,' reflecting the practice’s embrace of a well-trodden path, following in the footsteps of artists who’ve created meaningful, inspiring works. Neue Sans Press looks back to move forward, applying this philosophy to revisiting memories and childhood roots while utilizing Risography—an old, well-used method of making. After all, “the new things are just history you haven’t studied yet.”

The name also playfully nods to the homonym 'nuisance,' a fitting reflection of the quirks inherent in Risograph printing—misalignments, paper jams, and ink rolls on paper—traits that, in a capitalist or utilitarian context, might be seen as flaws. This practice instead celebrates these imperfections, viewing Risography as a genuine and sincere form of artmaking, full of nuisances and nuances alike.
